Becoming a 'Thrive Early Years Setting'
Beechdale Nursery is proud to be introducing the Thrive approach
The Thrive Approach is a way of supporting the social and emotional needs of children.
The practical, evidence-informed approach helps our staff understand behaviour, support children’s personal, social and emotional development (PSED), and build strong foundations for learning.
When behaviour feels unpredictable and children’s needs are becoming more complex, Thrive gives staff a clear, consistent way to respond.
At its heart is a simple idea: behaviour is communication. When a child is struggling, their behaviour is often telling us something about what they need. Thrive helps us understand that and shows us what to do next.
Thrive gives a shared, evidence-backed way to identify children's social and emotional needs earlier, respond with confidence and improve inclusion, attendance, behaviour, wellbeing and readiness to learn.
Developed over more than 30 years, it brings together learning from education, social work and psychotherapy to give our staff a clear, practical way to make sense of behaviour and respond in ways that help.
Inclusion in schools starts with understanding need.
What it means to be a Thrive Early Years Setting
Becoming a Thrive Setting means we share a clear understanding of children’s development and what their behaviour is telling us.
We can recognise where each child is developmentally and respond in ways that help them feel safe, settled, and ready to explore and play.
In practice, this means less second-guessing, more consistency, and greater confidence when supporting children with a wide range of needs.
What changes in a Thrive Early Years Setting
Children settle and engage more quickly - When children feel safe and understood, they’re better able to regulate, explore, and take part in play and early learning
Staff respond with clarity and confidence - We know what to look for and what to do next, reducing mixed responses and uncertainty in the moment.
Our environment feels calmer - Fewer escalations and less time spent firefighting behaviour create more settled, predictable days for everyone.
Where 'Thrive' makes a difference
SEND and Inclusion: Strengthen inclusive provision so pupils with SEND, and others facing barriers to learning or belonging are supported.
Pupil Wellbeing: Help pupils feel settled and ready to learn, so they can take part more fully in lessons and school life.
Behaviour: Reduce disruption and escalation by helping staff understand the need behind behaviour and respond consistently.
